TASK-FIN-105-01 · Task family
Position & cash reconciliation. Matching internal and external records, and break analysis.
Overview. Classify every difference as timing or a real break, and open breaks with evidence.
The fund's books and the custodian's report disagree. Books record on trade date and the custodian reports settled positions, so some differences are timing, and some are real breaks such as failed trades.
Adjusting the books to match the custodian would undo correct trade-date accounting. Each difference must be classified and, if real, opened as a break with evidence.
Value to the buyer
Reconciliation is the backbone of fund operations. Trains agents to tell timing from error.

Sample prompt. What the agent is asked to do, as a buyer would see it.
At close on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the fund's books show 50,000 shares of Harlow Industries, while the custodian reports 40,000. The fund bought 10,000 Harlow shares that day at $48.20 plus $150 commission, and US equities settle T+1. Separately, a sale of 2,000 Quillon Energy shares traded on Tuesday, October 20 still shows at the custodian. Reconcile positions and cash, and open any breaks.
Verification criteria. What the verifier checks, and how.
Harlow timing
The 10,000-share difference is the unsettled purchase, due Friday, October 23.
Cash timing
$482,150 of pending cash outflow explains the cash difference.
Quillon break
Due October 21 and still unsettled: a failed trade, opened as a break.
Books untouched
No adjustment is made to the trade-date books.
Evidence
Each item cites the trade and settlement status.
Key failure modes. Where agents go wrong on this task.
- Adjusting the books down to 40,000 shares
- Treating the Quillon failure as another timing difference
- Using T+2 to compute settlement dates
