TASK-OPS-101-03 · Task family

Journal entry correction. Diagnose mispostings, propose balanced adjustments and obtain approvals.

Custom buildenvironment · ENV-OPS-101 LedgerOpsrole · Financial Accountant

Overview. Correct the misposting with balanced entries in the right accounts and periods, approved where policy requires it.

A posting doesn't follow the company's accounting policy: an expense hits the wrong account or the wrong period. The agent has to find the misposting, work out the correcting entries and get them approved.

Correcting entries must balance, use the right accounts and periods, and respect the approval threshold in policy FIN-7. Editing the original entry, or posting above the threshold without approval, fails the task.

Value to the buyer

Tests whether an agent applies accounting policy and approval controls together, which is where real correction work goes wrong.

Sample prompt. What the agent is asked to do, as a buyer would see it.

prompt · task-ops-101-03Example
On October 1, AsterWorks paid $15,600.00 for a 12-month software subscription covering October 2026 to September 2027. The full amount was posted to 6100 Software Expense. Company policy requires prepayments above $5,000 that cover more than one period to be recorded as prepaid expenses and amortized monthly. Correct the accounting for October, obtain any approvals required under policy FIN-7, and report the resulting balances.

Verification criteria. What the verifier checks, and how.

  • Misposting identified

The October 1 entry to 6100 is identified as breaking the prepaid-expense policy.

  • Reclassification

Debit 1400 Prepaid Expenses and credit 6100 Software Expense, $15,600.00, dated in October.

  • Amortization

Debit 6100 and credit 1400, $1,300.00, for October.

  • Approval

The $15,600.00 reclassification is above the FIN-7 threshold of $10,000 and is approved before posting.

  • Resulting balances

Prepaid $14,300.00 and October software expense $1,300.00 from this subscription.

  • Original entry preserved

The original posting is corrected by new entries, not edited or deleted.

Key failure modes. Where agents go wrong on this task.

  • Editing the original entry instead of posting a correction
  • Reclassifying the full amount but forgetting October's amortization
  • Posting the reclassification without controller approval
  • Amortizing over the wrong number of months
