TASK-OPS-101-01 · Task family
Bank reconciliation. Match bank and ledger records, explain discrepancies and avoid incorrect matches.
Overview. Produce a reconciliation in which the adjusted bank and book balances agree, with every reconciling item supported and correctly classified.
The agent reconciles a month of activity on an operating bank account against the general ledger cash account. The bank feed and the ledger disagree, and the difference is a mix of timing items and items only the bank has recorded so far.
Each reconciling item has to be classified correctly: some adjust the bank side, some need a journal entry on the book side, and some are errors that need investigation. An agent that forces a match to make the totals agree fails the task even if the final balance looks right.
Value to the buyer
Trains the habit that matters most in reconciliation: explaining a difference item by item instead of making the totals agree.

- parent_environment:
- ENV-OPS-101 · LedgerOps
- target_role:
- Financial Accountant
- objective:
- Produce a reconciliation in which the adjusted bank and book balances agree, with every reconciling item supported and correctly classified.
- starting_context:
- A September bank statement in camt.053 form, the cash account's ledger detail, the AR and AP subledgers, and a close checklist with bank reconciliation open.
- tools:
search_bank_transactionsget_gl_entriesget_payment_historyget_invoicepropose_journal_entryupdate_reconciliation
- required_actions:
- Match cleared items between the statement and the ledger
- Identify deposits in transit and outstanding checks
- Identify items the bank has recorded that the ledger hasn't, and propose the book-side entries
- Document anything that can't be explained, rather than forcing a match
- expected_outputs:
- A reconciliation record with adjusted bank and book balances
- Proposed journal entries for book-side items
- Notes on any unexplained difference
- interaction:
- Single agent with tool access. Proposed entries go to a simulated controller for approval.
- verification:
- Adjusted balances are recomputed from the seeded transactions, and each match is compared with the ground-truth pairing.
- reward:
- Credit for correct classification of each reconciling item and for agreeing adjusted balances. Incorrect matches cost more than unmatched items.
- difficulty:
- Calibrated against reference models during acceptance testing
- task_horizon:
- Multi-step, two systems plus documents. Execution limits are agreed with the buyer.
- delivery:
- Task instances with seeded state, reference reconciliations and verifier code.
- commercial_unit:
- Per validated task instance
Sample prompt. What the agent is asked to do, as a buyer would see it.
You are reconciling AsterWorks' operating account at the September close. The bank statement shows a closing balance of $1,284,350.00, while the general ledger cash account shows $1,291,870.00, a difference of $7,520.00. Review the statement, the ledger detail and the subledgers. Identify every reconciling item, propose journal entries for any item the ledger hasn't recorded yet, and complete the reconciliation so that adjusted bank and book balances agree. Don't mark an item as matched unless the records support it.
Verification criteria. What the verifier checks, and how.
Deposit in transit identified
The $4,200.00 customer receipt recorded on September 30 is added to the bank side.
Outstanding check identified
Check 10482 for $9,800.00 is deducted from the bank side, not reversed in the ledger.
Bank fee recorded
A $120.00 fee entry is proposed against bank charges, debiting expense and crediting cash.
Returned item handled
The $13,000.00 returned customer payment is reinstated as a receivable, not written off.
Balances agree
Adjusted bank and book balances both equal $1,278,750.00, recomputed by the verifier.
No forced matches
Every matched pair corresponds to the ground-truth pairing. Plugs and one-sided adjustments score zero.
Key failure modes. Where agents go wrong on this task.
- Posting a single plug entry for the $7,520.00 difference
- Reversing the outstanding check in the ledger instead of listing it as a reconciling item
- Writing off the returned payment instead of reinstating the receivable
- Matching items with equal amounts but different counterparties
